George Frederick Handel’s Jephtha
An Iford Arts Production
July 22 | 25 | 28 | 29 | Aug 1 | 2
Jephtha’s bold deal with God leads to unimaginable consequences for his innocent daughter Iphis and his outraged wife, Storge. As Jephtha’s faith is challenged and his doubts grow Handel lays bare this extraordinary family drama with stunning arias which reveal him still at the very height of his powers. From Jephtha’s ‘How dark O Lord are thy decrees’ to his achingly beautiful ‘Waft her, Angels, through the skies’; from Storge’s nightmarish ‘Scenes of Horror’ to the great quartet ‘O spare your daughter’ the old testament story surges forward framed with dramatic choruses from an ensemble of young Handelians. Conducted by Christopher Bucknall (Agrippina in 2015) and directed by Tim Nelson, this great work, with its surprising conclusion, still raises questions for today.
