Candide is a breathtaking work, hovering somewhere between opera and operetta, defying description.
Our innocent hero, Candide, an idealistic optimist is taken on a round-the-world quest,, encountering a series of absurdly unfortunate events, teaching him the lessons of life. Candide has a Pythonesque sensibility, satirizing the foibles and hypocrisies of man, and probing the big questions which haunt us all. As we follow the imagined fortunes of the four young leading characters, it lurches from one far-flung location to another with gleeful accounts of human suffering and merry lampooning of revered notions. The brilliant overture has become one of the most frequently performed orchestral compositions by a 20th century American composer. And after that Leonard Bernstein gallivanted through every dance form he could think of in the process of composing the music: tango, polka, mazurka, Schottische, Venetian waltz, English folk song, gavotte, barcarole, Neapolitan bel canto, Germanic chorale and operatic coloratura ( with its favourite show-stopping lollipop for many leading sopranos ‘Glitter and be Gay’). Yet despite the cynical tone of the novella, Bernstein’s fabulous music takes us somewhere else entirely, especially in the much-loved, divinely radiant finale, “Make Our Garden Grow.”
This new production by Iford Arts, in collaboration with Opera della Luna, is in the expert hands of Jeff Clarke, a director whose inventive, irreverent, hilarious and high energy shows at Iford have never failed to delight audiences.
“The intimacy of the setting puts everything into dangerously sharp focus, but Iford Festival Opera bring it all off with their hallmark panache and ingenuity” The Independent
