Iford Arts is proud to announce the creation of a new performing version of A Fairy Queen.
July | Sat 23 | Wed 27 | Fri 29 | Sat 30 | Aug | Tues 2 | Wed 3 |
Christian Curnyn has been indisposed and has been unable to participate (though we are pleased to hear that he is now recovering.) In the absence of Christian it will be very exciting to hear this ingenious new take on Purcell’s beautiful ‘semi opera’ straight from the hands of its creator, Tim Nelson, who is of course, also an established harpsichordist and conductor.
We are all eagerly looking forward the Iford premiere of Tim’s innovative realisation, the culmination of a year’s work.
We also look forward to getting your views afterwards.
Conductor: Tim Nelson
Director: Tim Nelson
Sung in English
Anyone who has ever fallen madly in love should be in the audience for Fairy Queen at Iford. It is based firmly on scenes from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tim Nelson has created a new performing version of Henry Purcell’s score fused more closely than heretofore with Shakespeare’s most beloved comic fantasy. Purcell’s brilliant, acid, spikey, haunting, dance-driven music will be performed by Tim Nelson from the harpsichord alongside the Early Opera Company orchestra, together with a starry cast of singers. The music in our new version creates a continuous thread, entangling the Fairies, the runaway lovers and the ‘rude mechanicals’ together in an English dreamworld. In the other- worldly atmosphere of Iford, other-worldly explanations are as good as any other to explain the ridiculous and inexplicable gusts of human passion…
